WES: UNMIS Bangladesh sector hands over agro-based project
January 27, 2010 (JUBA) – The Bangladesh sector within UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) has, in collaboration with the African Union (AU), officially handed over an agro-based project to the people of Western Equatoria State (WES).
The project, estimated at costing $15,000, has been earmarked to help people in Maridi county of WES cultivate their fields as a mechanism to enhance sustainable development.
Among the different crops piloted during the project, which ran from July 2010 to January 2011, were sunflower, banana, pineapple, wheat, palm trees and others.
Part of the statement issued by Bangladesh sector-1 of UNMIS reads:
“Although the beneficiaries of the project encompass all civil and military components of UNMIS at Maridi, the project indeed created a positive impact on the locals of Maridi town and heightened the image of UN Forces as a whole.”
The project, which has already been completed, will reportedly have a long-term effect on the socio-economic aspects of the semi-autonomous region.
The colourful occasion, held at Don Bosco Manguo School in Maridi attracted among others officials from WES government, AU and the Bangladesh contingent members.
