Commissioner imposing ‘Mujahid’ tax on citizens in West Darfur
The commissioner of Bedah in West Darfur has reportedly imposed fees on citizens in Bedah, Arara, Kengo and Mistray to support provisions for the ‘Mujahjid’ and the National Congress Party’s military campaign against the Nuba Mountains and the Sudan Revolutionary Front.
In a statement the Bedah People’s Association said that between 100 and 200 Sudanese pounds were being deducted from the salaries of workers and local chiefs.
They also said traders were expected to pay 50 pounds, and each household levied with five pounds. Livestock and crops are taken from those without money.
The Association said that anyone that doesn’t pay is subject to imprisonment.
It said authorities have carried out a campaign of arrests on those that do not comply.
It added that the imposed fees and subsequent arrests are ‘unfair and unjust’.
