Jonglei MPs demand resignation of state speaker
May 28, 2012 (LONDON) – A group of five MPs from South Sudan’s Jonglei State have called on the state’s speaker, Peter Chol Wal, to resign, signing a letter announcing that they have “lost confidence” in him.
The MPs accuse Wal of acting unlawfully by imposing a recess on the Jonglei Legislative Assembly during debates over the troubled state’s peace process, without the approval of its members.
In a 8 May letter to Jonglei governor, Kuol Manyang Juuk, the five MPs say Wal has divided the parliament into “friends and enemies, upper MPs and lower MPs”.
They asked the governor to review the “appalling State of affairs at the assembly since he took oath”.
The MPs; Moses Mayul Bol; Baranba Okony Gilo; Philip Thon Nyok; James Diu Chanck; Akelo Cham; and Kuol Bol list 11 alleged instances of Wal violating the state’s constitution.
They also accuse the speaker of intimidating MPs, administrative incompetence, financial malpractice, among other allegations listed in the letter obtained by Sudan Tribune.
